EPRIE 2018 "Media in times of populism and post-truth politics"

EPRIE (Exchange Program For Regional Integration In East Asia And Europe) 2018 took place from June 27th to July 08th in Poland, Germany and Belgium. This year's theme was "Media in times of populism and post-truth politics - challenges and opportunities".

The goal of EPRIE is to facilitate exchange between young leaders from Europe and East Asia. In 2018, the challenges facing the media were addressed, in particular the rising tide of populism and post-truth politics.

The traditional media are increasingly forced to build up new trust if they do not want to lose importance. In order to meet these challenges, they must find innovative ways to organize and finance journalism. On the other hand, social media can be used to spread populist news, fake news and hate speech. However, they also offer us the opportunity to develop new ideas, to cooperate across borders and to find new ways of participation.

During the seminar, the participants discussed how the media are related to the dynamics of populism and why post-truth politics and "fake news" appeal to so many people. The participants explored how media can be used to create new channels of communication and popular participation. It was also examined how new and independent actors in Europe and East Asia refute "fake news" through investigative research, data journalism and fact-checking.
