International Symposium: The Energy Revolution and the Comparative Political Economy of the Feed-in Tariff

This conference compares the political economy of the renewable energy revolution and its main policy driver, the feed-in tariff, in the three regions of East Asia, Europe, and North America.

Studies by the International Energy Association, Deutsche Bank, the Stern Review, the UN Environmental Program, the World Future Council, the US National Renewable Energy Lab and other agencies show that the feed-in tariff – which has already been adopted by 75 national and subnational jurisdictions – is the most effective, widely used tool for fostering the uptake of renewable energy. For example, on a global scale 75% of solar photovoltaics and 45% of wind power have been fostered by feed-in tariffs. Virtually all developed and developing economies are commited to expanding renewable energy, for environmental reasons as well as to encourage innovation and employment growth sectors in the continuing havoc brought by the financial crisis. This conference presents the context as well as case studies by expert participants in the respective countries’ policy-making processes, experts who also possess considerable experience and insight into comparative cases. Our conference on why and in which way various countries have adopted feed-in tariff policies aims to contribute to the development of comparative political economy as well as help disseminate crucial policy learning.
